This image from the International Space Station, taken on August 11, looks down on Earth's horizon over the Indian Ocean. Red and green curtains of aurora australis glow in the upper atmosphere. The aurora is caused by excited oxygen atoms, still present at the ISS's altitude of 430 kilometers. Green emission from atomic oxygen is particularly prominent.
