Unexpected Clouds Toward the Andromeda Galaxy

NASA APOD · Yann Sainty & Marcel Drechsler
COSMIC MESSAGE

Arcs of gas emitting oxygen have been discovered near the Andromeda galaxy, and astronomers are not sure why. These blue arcs were first confirmed by amateur astronomers just last year. One theory is that they are close to Andromeda, while another suggests they are filaments within our own Milky Way. Adding to the mystery, these arcs were not seen in previous images of M31 taken in hydrogen light.
