M81 and M82, two galaxies twelve million light-years away in the constellation Ursa Major, are locked in a billion-year gravitational battle. M81 is a grand spiral galaxy with a bright yellow core, while M82 is an irregular, cigar-shaped galaxy. The gravitational pull from each galaxy has profoundly affected the other during a series of close encounters.
