Mars traces a Z-shaped path across the night sky over several months, a phenomenon known as retrograde motion. This composite image shows Mars moving past the Pleiades and Hyades star clusters in Taurus. Mars does not actually reverse its orbit; this apparent backward motion is due to Earth's faster orbit around the Sun.
