This close-up image shows a sunspot, a cooler, darker depression on the Sun's surface. Sunspots are created by the Sun's magnetic field, which inhibits hot material from entering these regions. This particular sunspot, part of active region AR 3297, is larger than Earth and features a bright 'light bridge' spanning its dark center.
