Messier 101 is an enormous spiral galaxy, almost twice the size of our Milky Way. It sits about 170,000 light-years across and was one of the original spiral nebulae observed by Lord Rosse's 19th-century telescope. This image is a mosaic of 51 exposures recorded by the Hubble Space Telescope.
