The Vela Supernova Remnant

NASA APOD · José Mtanous
COSMIC MESSAGE

About twelve thousand years ago, a star in Vela exploded, creating the Vela Supernova Remnant. The outer layers of the star crashed into the interstellar medium, driving a shock wave. This image, captured over 60 hours, shows some of the resulting filamentary gas clouds.
