COSMIC MESSAGE
Markarian's Chain, a string of galaxies in the Virgo Galaxy Cluster, includes these two interacting galaxies: NGC 4438 and NGC 4435, also known as The Eyes. About 50 million light-years away, these galaxies have likely approached within an estimated 16,000 light-years of each other in their past. Gravitational tides from that encounter have affected their structures.
