The "claw" in this image is a gas cloud known as a cometary globule, though this particular one has ruptured. Cometary globules typically have dusty heads and elongated tails, giving them a visual resemblance to comets, but they are very different. These globules are often birthplaces of stars, with many containing very young stars within their heads.
