This 1976 image from the Viking 2 lander shows Utopia Planitia on Mars, a vast plain strewn with rocks and boulders. The scene approximates how the Martian surface would appear to the human eye. The prominent rounded rock near the center is about 20 centimeters across. Two trenches dug by the lander are also visible, providing scale for the Martian landscape.
