Gigantic jets are a type of lightning discharge that shoot upward from thunderstorms into Earth's ionosphere. Documented only in this century, they are distinct from regular cloud-to-cloud lightning. This composite image captures four such jets, occurring minutes apart, rising from a thunderstorm towards the Himalayan Mountains.
