COSMIC MESSAGE

Shimmering curtains of aurora borealis, typically seen at higher latitudes, appeared surprisingly vivid over Monroe County, West Virginia. This image, taken on October 10, shows the colorful display above a gravel country lane. The extensive auroral presence at such low latitudes was a rare event. It was caused by a powerful solar flare that sent energetic particles toward Earth.
