A December Winter Night

Orion climbs over mountains in this deep skyscape, captured from southern Poland on the northern hemisphere's long solstice night. The camera, modified to record red hydrogen-alpha light, reveals otherwise unseen nebulae. These nebulae lie near the edge of the Orion molecular cloud, joining the Hunter's familiar belt stars and bright giants Betelgeuse and Rigel. Yellowish Aldebaran, the Eye of Taurus the Bull, anchors the scene.
