“NGC 2685: The Helix Galaxy” is copyrighted by Stefan Thrun. NASA has permission to show it and we don't, so it isn't on this card.
See it on NASA's siteNGC 2685 is a rare polar ring galaxy, with stars, gas, and dust orbiting perpendicular to its main disk. This strange structure might have formed when the galaxy captured material from another galaxy. However, observations suggest this rotating helix is remarkably old and stable. This sharp view helps astronomers study its unusual configuration.
