NGC 1309 is a spiral galaxy about 100 million light-years distant in the constellation Eridanus. It spans about 60,000 light-years, making it about two-thirds the size of our Milky Way. Bluish clusters of young stars and dust lanes trace its spiral arms, winding around an older, yellowish star population at its core. It is a useful galaxy for observing supernovae.
