Lightning doesn't just happen between clouds. Over the past 50 years, other types of upper-atmospheric lightning have been confirmed, including red sprites and ringed ELVES. Sprites are brighter and easier to photograph, lasting only a fraction of a second. This image shows both phenomena over Italy.
