Light Pillars and Orion over Mohe

NASA APOD · Jeff Dai (TWAN)
COSMIC MESSAGE

These are not auroras, but light pillars, a phenomenon caused by ice crystals reflecting light. Here, they extend upwards from streetlights in Mohe, China. Orion, a prominent constellation, is also visible in the sky. This atmospheric effect occurs when flat, fluttering ice crystals near the ground reflect artificial light during freezing temperatures.
