Melas, Candor, and Ophir: Valleys of Mariner

Valles Marineris, Mars's grand canyon, is a vast system of depressions stretching 4,000 kilometers along the Martian equator. This spectacular perspective view, first imaged by the Mariner 9 spacecraft, looks north over the canyon's central regions. Dark Melas Chasma lies in the foreground, with Candor Chasma and the steep walls of Ophir Chasma near the horizon. The complex geological history of this region includes faulting, surface collapse, and landslides.
