Giant Galaxies in Pavo

NASA APOD · Mike Selby
COSMIC MESSAGE

NGC 6872, at over 500,000 light-years across, is an enormous barred spiral galaxy. It is at least five times the size of our own Milky Way. Its distorted and stretched-out spiral arms suggest the wings of a giant bird, earning it the popular moniker "Condor galaxy." NGC 6872 lies about 200 million light-years distant in the southern constellation Pavo, the Peacock. Its distorted spiral arms are lined with star-forming regions.
