After landing on the Moon, Apollo 14 astronauts Alan Shepard and Edgar Mitchell set up the Apollo Lunar Surface Experiments Package, or ALSEP. This included a seismometer to detect moonquakes and meteoroid impacts, and charged particle detectors for the solar wind. They also collected samples of lunar material. The ALSEP provided valuable data about the Moon's interior and environment.
