Fifty years ago, Apollo 17 commander Eugene Cernan took this stereo view of the Moon from the Lunar Module Challenger. The image shows the Sea of Serenity, a large, dark, basaltic plain on the Moon's near side. Cernan and Harrison Schmitt were orbiting just before descending to land in the Taurus-Littrow Valley.
