NGC 5189: A Strange Planetary Nebula

NASA APOD · Anglo-Australian Telescope Board
COSMIC MESSAGE

NGC 5189 is a planetary nebula with a strange and chaotic structure. After a Sun-like star exhausts its core fuel, it expels its outer layers, forming such a nebula. The inner part of NGC 5189 contains an unusual expanding ring of gas, which we see nearly edge-on. The exact mechanism of gas expulsion is still under investigation.
