Lightning and the Space Shuttle

Lightning is a phenomenon still not fully understood, observed on Earth, Venus, Jupiter, and Saturn. A leading theory suggests that collisions of particles in clouds create large areas of positive and negative charge. When these oppositely charged areas get close enough, electrons and ions race between them, creating a path for more charged particles to follow, which we see as lightning. On average, over 100 lightning strikes occur every second across Earth's surface.
