On November 13, 1833, the sky over eastern North America erupted with meteors, hundreds of thousands of them. This wood engraving captures the event, known as the Great Meteor Storm. It seemed as if the streaks poured out of the constellation Leo. Many people, including a young Abraham Lincoln, witnessed the spectacle.
