A Lucky Lunar Eclipse

NASA APOD · Andy Steere
COSMIC MESSAGE

A total lunar eclipse occurred tonight, a fortunate event for those hoping to see Comet Hyakutake. Normally, a full moon would wash out the comet's tail, even in dark skies. During an eclipse, the Moon passes through Earth's shadow, dimming its light. Sunlight scattered through Earth's dusty atmosphere can give the eclipsed Moon a reddish hue.
