In the 1920s, Edwin Hubble used photographic plates from the Mt. Wilson Observatory's 100-inch telescope to measure the distance to the Andromeda Nebula. His work proved that other galaxies exist beyond the Milky Way. On this plate, you can see Hubble's notations as he searched for novae, stars that suddenly increase in brightness.
