Uranus's Moon Umbriel: A Mysterious Dark World

Umbriel, one of Uranus's moons, is a dark world that reflects only half the light of Ariel, another moon of Uranus. Voyager 2 flew past Umbriel in 1986, revealing an ancient surface with large craters. Scientists still do not know why Umbriel is so dark, nor what caused the bright ring seen at the top of the photo. The moon is composed of roughly half ice and half rock.
