COSMIC MESSAGE
Comet Hyakutake made its closest approach to the Sun on May 1, 1996, passing inside Mercury's orbit. As it neared the Sun, gas and dust were driven off its surface, forming jets. These jets, along with the comet's rotating three-kilometer nucleus, created interesting features near the comet's head.
