The Virgo Cluster: Hot Plasma and Dark Matter

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

This ROSAT image of the Virgo cluster of galaxies shows hot, X-ray emitting plasma with a temperature of 10 to 100 million degrees. The large area of X-ray emission, about 1 million light-years across, centers on the giant elliptical galaxy M87. Analyzing this plasma helps astronomers estimate the cluster's total mass, including its dark matter.
