COSMIC MESSAGE
The dark, curly lanes in this image are part of the Snake Nebula, a series of dark absorption clouds in the constellation Ophiuchus. These clouds are made of interstellar dust grains, mostly carbon, that absorb visible starlight. This absorption blocks light from background stars, creating the appearance of voids in the sky. The dust reradiates much of the absorbed light in the infrared, which is a band of light too red for human eyes to see.
