COSMIC MESSAGE
On September 24, 1996, the Burst and Transient Source Experiment, BATSE, recorded the most intense gamma ray burst in its history. This instrument, onboard the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, detects about one such burst per day. The origin and distance of these powerful cosmic explosions remain a mystery to astronomers.
