Phobos Over Mars

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

In 1977, the Viking 2 Orbiter captured Phobos, Mars's diminutive moon, against the backdrop of a large shield volcano. Phobos was hurtling just 3,000 miles above the Martian surface when this image was taken. The Orbiter was about 8,000 miles above the volcano, Ascraeus Mons, looking down on the scene. North is toward the top of the image.
