NGC 289: Swirl in the Southern Sky

NASA APOD · Mike Selby
COSMIC MESSAGE

This is NGC 289, a spiral galaxy larger than our Milky Way, about 70 million light-years away. Its bright core and central disk give way to faint, bluish spiral arms that extend over 100,000 light-years. In the lower right, a smaller elliptical galaxy appears to be interacting with NGC 289, a common occurrence in the universe.
