COSMIC MESSAGE
The Large Magellanic Cloud, or LMC, is one of two small irregular galaxies orbiting our Milky Way. Magellan and his crew named these "star clouds" during their voyage around the world. The LMC is about 180,000 light-years distant, making it the closest known galaxy after the Sagittarius Dwarf. It is a satellite of our larger spiral galaxy.
