COSMIC MESSAGE

Jupiter's moon Io glows green at night, as seen in this image from the Galileo spacecraft. The red spots are active volcanoes, but the global green sheen is a different phenomenon. One hypothesis suggests it is an aurora, caused by high-energy particles interacting with Io's volcanic plumes while the moon is in Jupiter's shadow.
