COSMIC MESSAGE

The Space Shuttle Endeavour captured this time exposure of the Aurora Australis, or southern lights, from low Earth orbit in April 1994. Aurorae are caused by high-energy electrons from the solar wind. These electrons are funneled into Earth's atmosphere near the poles by our planet's magnetic field. The reddish colors in the aurora occur at the highest altitudes, around 200 miles above the surface.
