COSMIC MESSAGE
Clyde Tombaugh, the astronomer who discovered Pluto, is pictured here in 1995 with a telescope he built in 1927. He used discarded farm machinery and car parts to construct this 9-inch Newtonian reflector. Tombaugh, who passed away on January 17, 1997, at the age of 90, made detailed drawings of planetary surfaces with this very instrument before his groundbreaking discovery. Today would have been his 91st birthday.
