COSMIC MESSAGE
The Crab Nebula, also known as M1, is filled with mysterious filaments, the result of a star that exploded in 1054 AD. This spectacular supernova was recorded by Chinese and Anasazi Indian astronomers. The filaments are enigmatic because they appear to have less mass than expelled in the original supernova and higher speed than expected from a free explosion. In this picture, color indicates the electron activity in different parts of the nebula.
