Comet Hale-Bopp re-emerged from behind the Sun in January 1997, becoming visible in the morning sky. This photo from January 31, 1997, captures its two distinct tails. The blue wisp, pointing upwards, is the ion tail, made of ionized gas pushed by the solar wind. The broader, white fuzz is the dust tail, composed of dust particles reflecting sunlight. Hale-Bopp was visible from dark locations even without binoculars.
