NGC 4651: The Umbrella Galaxy

NASA APOD · CFHT
COSMIC MESSAGE

NGC 4651 is known as the Umbrella Galaxy because of the stream of stars appearing to rain from its disk. This stellar parasol, stretching 100,000 light-years, is the remains of a smaller satellite galaxy. The smaller galaxy was torn apart by repeated close encounters with NGC 4651, which is similar in size to our Milky Way.
