COSMIC MESSAGE
By March 1997, Comet Hale-Bopp became visible in the evening sky, no longer requiring early morning viewing. From many northern locations, it could be seen above the northwestern horizon just after sunset. Even from bright cities, its central coma was visible, and from darker locations, its blue ion tail was distinct. The comet's brightness was impressive, rivaling last year's Comet Hyakutake.
