COSMIC MESSAGE
Comet Hale-Bopp lived up to expectations with its impressive tails. This picture, taken in March 1997, shows its dramatic blue ion tail, which stretched about 20 degrees from dark locations. The white dust tail, while more modest, was also growing significantly. The comet was approaching its closest point to the Sun, which would further enhance its brightness.
