COSMIC MESSAGE
The Milky Way, our galaxy, appears flat when viewed in infrared light. This premier view of our galaxy's central region was captured by the COsmic Background Explorer, COBE, satellite in 1990. Gas and dust in the disk obscure visible light, but infrared light allows us to see through to the center, revealing its spiral structure with a central bulge.
