COSMIC MESSAGE
Comet Hale-Bopp, discovered in 1995, developed prominent tails as it approached the inner Solar System. This image shows its two main tails: a blue ion tail and a white dust tail. The ion tail, composed of charged particles, is pushed directly away from the Sun by the solar wind. The dust tail, made of larger particles, curves behind the comet along its orbit. Hale-Bopp put on a spectacular display in 1997.
