The Arecibo radio telescope in Puerto Rico is the largest single-dish telescope in the world. Opened in 1963, its 305-meter dish sits in a natural valley. Arecibo has been used to study pulsars and map gas in our galaxy and the universe. It can also send and receive radio waves, bouncing them off other objects.
