COSMIC MESSAGE

Comet Hale-Bopp's nucleus, a dirty snowball 25 miles wide, spins once every 12 hours. This rotation causes jets of material to shoot away from its surface. These ejected particles form rings, which appear as the "hoods" seen in the coma in this photograph. The comet is now moving away from the Sun, heading south and dimming.
