Barred Spiral Galaxy NGC 1365

NASA APOD · D. Malin (AAO), AATB
COSMIC MESSAGE

Many spiral galaxies, including our own Milky Way, have a bar across their centers. NGC 1365, a member of the Fornax Cluster, has a particularly prominent one. The persistence and motion of this bar suggest relatively massive spiral arms. Bright young blue stars and dark dust lanes also indicate a strong, rotating density wave of star formation within the galaxy.
