Shells in the Egg Nebula

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Egg Nebula is a star shedding its outer layers of gas and dust as it evolves into a white dwarf. The Hubble Space Telescope's NICMOS instrument captured this image, showing shells of material being expelled. A thick torus of dust surrounds the star, through which the gas escapes in distinct beams.
