COSMIC MESSAGE

Tonight, the Perseid Meteor Shower reaches its peak. Grains of rocky ice, shed from Comet Swift-Tuttle, streak across the sky as they enter Earth's atmosphere and evaporate. This annual event, caused by Earth crossing the comet's orbit, is typically the most active meteor shower of the year. This image shows a Perseid meteor from 1993, with colors representing the different elements burning up.
