Kepler Discovers How Planets Move

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

Johannes Kepler used precise astronomical data from Tycho Brahe to describe how planets move. He showed that planets orbit the Sun in ellipses, not perfect circles. Kepler also discovered that planets speed up when they are closer to the Sun and that more distant planets take proportionally longer to complete their orbits. These three laws revolutionized our understanding of planetary motion.
